Within days of each other we have the news that the 13th Doctor Who is a female and that the BBC pay women less than men. Gary Lineker decided to start the debate early and the issue was trending before the annual report was announced.
The report does show the gender gap is live and kicking. The highest paid male gets over 2 million, the highest paid female around 450,000. Having a female lead does not stop sexism. As a country the pay gap will not be eradicated until 99 years after the Equal Pay Act. Progress is slow.
Pay is linked to 'talent' but the view that men are more talented or valuable needs to be overtly challenged. It is the employers duty to end this discrimination. Pressure always helps, and these valuable men have the power to exert this pressure by demanding their co-stars are paid the same. If the claim is then that there isn't enough budget, then male co-stars should take the cut to feel and expose the injustice, as Emma Stone has her male co-stars do to be paid the same as her.
With such high salaries just to entertain, a pay cut for all would be preferred, or a change of tax threshold, with that money going back into the pot for public sector workers, who have lost thousands since 2010 in real terms. Or perhaps there could be a public sector charity stars pay into to take the focus away from their paycheck. Or they could even star in a new BBC series, living on a nurses salary for the week.
A main reason this is making headlines is because people feel the salaries are too high for something that involves their money. The license fee is often questioned as it is another bill of many that households struggle with. If we are to make this a focal argument, lets ensure it is that all our pay is too low, outgoings are too high and our money is being wasted.
What this report really shows is that there is money for those deemed important, the majority of us aren't, and women, regardless of their profession, fare much worse.
